Nevada Chosen for Tesla’s $5 Billion GigaBattery Plant

A monumental win that will bring 22,000 jobs and pump $100 billion into Nevada’s economy over the next 20 years. At a press conference on Thursday, Gov. Brian Sandoval and Tesla Motors’ CEO Elon Musk announced that Nevada will be home to Tesla’s massive $5 billion lithium gigabattery plant. MSN.com reports that the facility would be 10 million square feet, equivalent to about 174 football fields. It would be located at an industrial park near Reno. Musk says he’s confident the plant would be ready in the next few years to mass produce batteries for Tesla’s electric cars. Two challenges are on the horizon for the project. First, lawmakers in Nevada must approve $1.3 billion in tax incentives offered by Gov. Sandoval. Environmental permits may get pushback as well.
