Adaptive reuse projects are popping up in cities around the U.S. as construction companies convert old buildings into hotels. One such mini-boom is taking place in Chicago. Many developers are turning to redevelopment rather than ground-up construction, writes Bob Geiger on GlobeSt.com. “Like the high tech industry, the hospitality industry is particularly drawn to the charm and history of old buildings, and adaptive reuse projects that preserve iconic historic features are increasingly popular.” Numerous factors have to be considered with these projects. Among them are lead-based paints, asbestos, electrical wiring insulation, mold, and contaminated groundwater.
