Engineers to Research ‘Wi-fi Sensing’ to Prevent Collapses

Engineers from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Canada’s Memorial University, and Qatar University are preparing to develop a wireless sensory network that will detect the onset of deterioration in bridges, stadiums, and other structures. A post on Globalconreview.com explains the sensor will help structures ‘feel’ their own vibrations, sagging, and stresses. It will send data to engineers to help them assess a structure’s soundness and prevent failures before they happen. One of the project partners is Mohamed Mahgoub, who serves as director of the Concrete Industry Management program at NJIT. “While the network can be installed on existing bridges, the aim is to embed it in a structure’s steel bars before the concrete is even poured,” Mahboub said. The three-year project begins in May.
