Construction and Road Challenges Facing New DOT Secretary

The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved Anthony Foxx as the new head of the Department of Transportation. Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte, NC, will be dealing with a glut of infrastructure issues.  “The top construction industry priority will be addressing the flagging financial health of the Highway Trust Fund, the major financing source for highways and an important revenue stream for transit projects, too,” writes Tom Ichniowski on ENR.com. How serious is the problem? Jay Hansen, National Asphalt Pavement Association executive vice president, says finding new revenues to close an estimated $10 billion shortfall expected by fiscal year 2015 is essential.
