Construction of High Rises and an Ageing Population Impacts Building and Design

New building codes, safety regulations and mobility issues for an ageing demographic are changing the way construction jobs are undertaken. Many of the new mandates result from the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, according to a post on Soureable.net. “In current international high rise design, this may include the use of an increased number of exit stairways, the use of safe areas or refuge floors within the building and the use of elevators to facilitate emergency evacuation of building occupants,” writes Justin McGar.  The firefighting community is included in McGar’s post, which also covers the possibility of collapsible elevators, slides and rooftop heliports that don’t require structural changes to existing high rises.
